The Shift to Contractor-Based Nomad Visas
European countries have realized that remote workers boost local economies. As a result, Spain, Italy, and Portugal have launched specific Digital Nomad Visas. Instead of requiring standard local corporate sponsorship, these visas allow you to reside legally in Europe while working for foreign entities (e.g. US or UK companies) as a contractor or employee.
Country Highlights
Spain Digital Nomad Visa
Launched in 2023 and refined in 2026, the Spanish digital nomad visa allows you to live in Spain while paying a reduced tax rate (Beckham Law) of 15% on income up to €600,000. You must prove you earn at least €2,400/month from clients located outside Spain.
Italy Remote Work Visa
Italy's new remote work visa targets highly skilled professionals. Candidates need a university degree or equivalent professional background, a minimum income of €28,000/year, and valid health insurance. It provides access to Italy's rich cultural hubs while letting you work asynchronously.
Portugal D8 Visa
Portugal remains a top choice for nomads. The D8 Digital Nomad Visa requires proof of monthly income equivalent to four times the Portuguese minimum wage (roughly €3,200/month). It grants residency and path to EU citizenship after 5 years.
